Karmic Fury Records is proud to support the awesome cause behind RecoveryRockFest! When do you get to see amazing music outside of the bar scene or surrounded by alcohol? Local music producer Nyla Cione is bringing this brand new concert style to Wilmington while at the same time supporting the recovery community and donating to a good cause. RecoveryRockFest features national headliner Melissa Ferrick and local favorites Folkstar, Stray Local, and Mike Blair and the Stonewalls.

RecoveryRockFest is a clean & sober rock/folk concert supporting people in recovery from addiction featuring original local and national artists Melissa Ferrick, Folkstar, Stray Local, and Mike Blair and the Stonewalls. It is known that 1 in 7 people from age 12 and older will have an issue with addiction and it is estimated that 40 million people are affected as a whole. RecoveryRockFest wishes to provide a substance free folk/rock concert in celebration of recovery and for those who desire a substance-free lifestyle. A portion of funds will go to support our local university UNCW-CRC Recovery Program* for students in recovery which offers resources for UNCW students in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, gambling addiction, and those affected by other people’s addictions.

our goals for rrf:
– raise awareness and bring the community together in celebration of recovery
– raise the funds needed for our inaugural event to then be a self-supporting event through ticket sales
– become a not-for-profit after the first year with an opportunity for people to serve for this event
– be an ongoing annual substance-free event for our community

some rrf history:
RecoveryRockFest (originally named Recovery Rocks) first started in 2009 in a small cafe in Bradenton, FL. It allowed people in recovery and their friends to enjoy a substance free concert in celebration of recovery, and to meet others in the community. RecoveryRockFest has moved to Wilmington, NC and we look forward to having this event here in our new recovery community.

Nyla’s story:
Addiction affects many families, friends, loved ones, and has also affected myself and my family. It is important to me to give back and to be a part of something that can carry a message of hope of recovery. To come together in one place through the language of music, and to share and show that recovery is worth it, and that we are not alone. Many people still struggle with addiction and I know for myself that when I met other people in recovery, I didn’t feel so alone. I personally have been in long term recovery for just over 23 years. It has allowed me to also be of further service to my community. It is something I get to do, and I am grateful to be able be a part of a positive message.

I personally welcome you to join us on our first year in Wilmington for RecoveryRockFest!

four great picks from this year's local releases

Local music is a wonderful holiday gift for the music aficionado in your life, whether it’s a new release from your brother’s favorite band or an EP from a group that you’re sure will become his new favorite. The gift of music also supports the hard working people in the Wilmington music scene, many of whom have spent lots of time and money perfecting their art. It’s a win all-around!

Local music expert and Star News WAE blogger Brian Tucker put together a list of the huge number of homegrown albums that dropped in 2014. Click here for Parts 1 and 2 of the list. You can pick up most of these releases by contacting the band directly or visiting our favorite local record store, Gravity Records.

Tonight, December 6th, we recommend stopping by Bourgie Nights, where local favorites Mike Blair and the Stonewalls are celebrating the release of their much anticipated full-length debut. In addition, the opening act is local folk trio Stray Local, who put out a new release of their own in October. For $5 at the door, you get to hear two great Americana acts, and for a few dollars more you can take home two of the year’s most talked-about releases. Click here to check out the Facebook event.

Coming up on Wednesday, December 10th is a show we’re very excited about and also sort of sad about. One of our favorites, Dylan Linehan, is putting on a going away show before she makes the leap to Los Angeles. Her “rock popera” has been a unique and welcome element on the music scene, and we’re going to miss her terribly. Go see Linehan perform all new original songs while accompanied by a full band which, in itself, is an all-star team of Wilmington musicians including: Keith Butler Jr. (drums), Michael Buckley (guitar), Vanessa Lynch (vocals), Nick Simon (bass), Sean Howard (bass), Chris James (vocals), and Hannah Lomas (vocals). Opening acts Chris James and Vanessa Lynch are amazing as well, so get there early. Presented by CioneProStudio, tickets are $10 at the door, $7 in advance. KFR Live in Wilmington #5: featuring James Ethan Clark

James Ethan Clark debuts Southern Hotel at Brooklyn Arts Center

Last month, James Ethan Clark hosted his CD release party at Brooklyn Arts Center in support of his debut album Southern Hotel. After well-known local openers Sean Thomas Gerard and Mike Blair & The Stonewalls, Clark played his new record in its entirety from start to finish.

We’ve seen James Ethan Clark play numerous times in town, including many times at solo acoustic shows. With a band backing him up, it’s a whole different experience. Not The Renegades we’ve seen before, but a new line-up featuring a couple members of the Stonewalls. In fact, Stonewalls’ guitarist Michael Graham nearly stole the show playing amazing guitar riffs and emanating pure joy as he played. The Stonewalls’ Keith Butler, Jr. and Tripp Cox of Onward, Soldiers formed the rhythm section, on drums and bass respectively. The set also included guest appearances by a violinist and pedal steel guitar player.

While Southern Hotel consists of several mellow tunes, it also includes some raucous americana-influenced rockers and the crowd at the Brooklyn Arts Center went wild during these songs in particular. “Destination” and “Anna Mae” filled the venue with raw rock energy and it was easy to see this impact the crowd. Speaking of the crowd, it was like a who’s who of the Wilmington area music community with Rio Bravo, Justin Lacy, and Graham Wilson among the crowd, just to name a few.

Pick up a copy of Southern Hotel at Gravity Records and then head out to catch the energy of James Ethan Clark and The Renegades live in person.
